Interview: Dani Busby

5 November 2025,

Some time this week to speak with one of our new signings, Dani Busby. Dani brings a wealth of experience to the squad and has settled in quickly.

Where have you played previously, and have you always been a footballer?

“I’ve been playing football since I was six…so, over 30 years now (cough cough). When I started, there wasn’t much in the way of girls’ football, so I joined a boys’ team “Risborough Rangers” just so I could play. Since then, I’ve played for clubs like Chesham, Oxford City, and represented the Berks and Bucks County team. I was also part of the Arsenal academy for a few years when I was younger, which was an incredible experience. Football’s always been my main sport and has been a constant throughout my life.”

What’s your best position and or where would you prefer to play?

“I feel that my best position now, is attacking centre midfield—that’s where I feel I can really influence the game. I love being in the thick of it: linking play, creating chances, and getting forward when I can. I’ve played in a few other roles over the years, left wing being a favourite but I don’t have the legs I used to!”

How would you describe your playing style?

“I’d say I’m a mix of a footballer and an organiser. I like to get on the ball, keep things ticking, and create chances, I do try to lead by example and keep the team connected, but I’m also vocal—I talk a lot on the pitch, help organise the team, and try to lift the energy when we need it. I’ve played the game long enough to be able to read it well. I’m also not shy about organising and having a word when needed (helpful or otherwise!). Basically, I’m the kind of player who’ll thread a pass through the tiniest gap…then shout at you for not reading my mind and being on the end of it!”

What’s your ambition?

“At this stage in my career, I’m very aware my playing days are numbered, so for me it’s about doing what my body still allows to help push WEFC as far as possible. I’m too old to be losing games for fun!”

Who’s the best player you’ve played with in a team?

“It has to be our captain at WEFC (Stevie). She can run and run and run—and never looks tired. Her incredible work rate and determination sets the tone for the whole team, and she’s the kind of player who drives everyone to give their best every single game.”

Any player you’d hate to play against every week?

“My fiancé Jacqui (Hanson), our striker! Between her physical strength and lightning bursts of speed, plus shots so powerful they practically drag the keeper into the net, she’s a one-woman wrecking ball. Trying to keep up with her? Good luck!!”

Best piece of footballing advice you’ve ever been given?

“Focus on the process, not just the outcome.” It’s a reminder that consistent hard work, discipline, and teamwork are what lead to real progress—not just winning or losing a single game. Keeping that mindset has helped me stay grounded and keep improving, no matter the challenges.”

What do you consider your biggest asset?

“I’d say my experience and football intelligence. Having played for over 30 years, I’ve developed a good understanding of the game, how to read it, and how to help organise the team on and off the ball. I might not be the quickest anymore, but I make up for it with vision, positioning, and knowing when to slow the game down—or speed it up when it matters.”

Something you’d like to be better at?

“Probably learning when to keep my mouth shut—mainly to the referee. I stay calm in the game, but sometimes the filter slips! And not recovery! I have accepted I’ll be sore for two days after a match, but you won’t catch me near an ice bath. I hate the cold more than I hate losing!”

What do you do outside of WEFC?

“I’m a full-time nanny and part-time dog walker—so basically, I spend my days chasing toddlers and dogs, then my evenings and weekends chasing a football! It’s busy, it’s loud, and it definitely keeps my fitness up… even if the dogs listen better than some teammates.”
