Interview: Stevie Romney

22 February 2024,

Signing for a new club is always a wonderful moment, but our signing of attacking midfielder Stevie Romney has a bit more prestige than most as, alongside Alana Corr, she’s the first to sign for our new women’s team.

So, we realise it is important to not only give her a big Red & Green welcome, but give supporters the chance to get to know her…

Stevie, welcome to Windsor & Eton, how does it feel to be one of the first players to join a woman’s team at Stag Meadow?

Thank you for having me. It feels incredibly exciting and empowering to be part of this historic moment. Being among the first players to join the women’s team at Stag Meadow is a privilege, and I’m eager to contribute to the growth and success of women’s football in Windsor.

What attracted you to want come and play football at Windsor?

Windsor has always had a rich footballing culture, and the opportunity to be part of establishing a senior women’s side here was too good to pass up. The club’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing a platform for women’s football was a major draw for me.

Why is it so important for the town of Windsor to finally have a senior women’s side?

Having a senior women’s side in Windsor is crucial for several reasons. It provides opportunities for local female athletes to showcase their talent, and strengthens community engagement with football. It’s about representation and giving women of all ages the chance to participate and excel in the sport they love.

What’s your position and how would you describe yourself in 5 words?!

I primarily play as a central attacking midfielder. In five words, I’d describe myself as determined, versatile, team-oriented, resilient, and passionate. (A female Frank Lampard)

Tell us a bit about your playing career to date?

I’ve been passionate about football since I was a child kicking a ball around since the age of 5. Played my early years amongst a boys team including my first year of 11 a side football. From there I played for Denham United Ladies and later Wealdstone Ladies before sadly retiring for a few years to deal with a heart issue. I’m now back to full strength, training for the London Marathon in April and ready to get my boots back on!

How strong is women’s football in the area?

Women’s football in the area is steadily growing and gaining momentum. There’s a strong grassroots foundation, with dedicated players, coaches, and supporters working tirelessly to develop the sport. With the establishment of a senior women’s side at Windsor, I believe we’ll see even more interest and participation in women’s football locally.

What do you hope to achieve at Windsor?

At Windsor, I hope to contribute to building a competitive and successful women’s team. I aim to help create a supportive and inclusive environment where players can thrive both on and off the field. Personally, I want to continue improving as a player and inspire the next generation of female footballers in Windsor.

I know you’re keen to get involved in coaching the girls’ teams at the club, why is that so important to you?

Coaching the girls’ teams is important to me because I believe in the power of role modeling and feel that it’s important within sport that young girls have female role models to look up to. As a female athlete, I want to support and encourage young girls to pursue their passion for football. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I hope to help them develop not only as players but also as confident and resilient individuals.

Finally, what’s your message to supporters of the men’s side to get them to come down and support the women?

To the supporters of the men’s side, I urge you to come down and support the women’s team as well, your support can make a huge difference. I know the Great Park Crew are big supporters of the mens team, hopefully they can rally behind us and bring some extra support to our games! Let’s unite as one club and create an atmosphere where both men’s and women’s teams thrive together.
