We’ve not checked in with our Women’s team Captain this side of the New Year, and there’s no time like the present! Thanks to Stevie (Romney) for her time week.
The table looks good reading. Did you expect to be top after 11 matches, or hoped?
“This time last year we were just starting the conversation about setting up a ladies section at Windsor & Eton FC. We are over the moon with how far as a team we have developed over the last year. When conversations first started, I didn’t expect us to be sat in this position, but after our first game together as a team, I knew we had something. True grit and determination along with a flaring passion for the game from all of the girls creates this buzz on the pitch. Hopefully we can continue the second half of the season together in the same way.”
Have targets changed 11 games in?
“If you had said to me when discussions first started that in our first season we’d be top of the league at halfway, I’d have laughed. However, once the summer came and the team started coming together, I knew we could work together to create something special. I think once you start a season so well, of course, expectations start to change but I am already so proud to be the captain of such a team, no matter what happens in the second half of the season. Saying that, I know how capable we all are when we work together, and I think we have the determination and will to see this season through and hopefully gain promotion.”
Has anything surprised you?
“Not a surprise as such, because I know how much hard work and determination they put into their training each week, but I would like to say how great it has been to see how far some of the ladies have come since they first joined the team. A shout out to Laura P who joined a little later and came in quietly and has now become a force to be reckoned with in our back line. She is the funniest one in the changing room; it’s been an absolute joy to see Laura develop into the fantastic player that she is. Also, a mention to Lors our striker too who has always been a very thoughtful and tactical player, can read the game so well. The link up play that has developed between the group of us midfielders and Lors and Ed up front has been fantastic and it’s a joy to see her face light up when she gets the ball across that line from one of Ed’s crosses!”
A tough one for you to answer, but who’s the standout player been for us so far?
“There are honestly so many names that I could mention within this. It is a really tricky one to answer! I can’t not mention Ed (Emma Donovan) to be honest. Ed joined us a little into the season and has absolutely shone in every game since. She cannot stop scoring and adds to her incredible tally every week as well as being speedy and so calm and controlled with each movement out there. Every family member and friend I have had come down to watch a game doesn’t leave without mentioning how great number 22 is.”
