It was great to be able to catch up with Emily Wilson this week. The time between shifts and training was much appreciated.
Emily joined us this season, but where might we have seen her playing before?
“My dad got me into football at a very young age. Growing up in the Cotswolds, I played at Swindon Town. I then played at university for the women’s performance team. That was a great experience with very talented players from America and professional clubs. We travelled all over the country.”
What’s your best position and or where would you prefer to play?
“I have always played on the wing, I’m quite quick with my feet and sprinting. The right side is definitely my favoured and I enjoy creating chances by playing through balls and crosses into the box.”
What’s your ambition?
“I took a break from playing due to work commitments. I really missed the competitive (and social) side of being part of a team. So, getting back to the level I was enjoying my football at is a big aim for me. However, being a part of the women’s team here and doing whatever I can to help us succeed in winning the league or gaining promotion and or getting all the way in the cup is a huge ambition for this season.”
What do you consider your biggest asset?
“I think my speed is a big asset, I can pick up my pace quickly to get away from the opposition.”
Something you’d like to be better at?
“I’d have to say using my weaker foot! My grandad would always shout from the sidelines ‘Use the left foot…it’s not for dancing!’ He’d get me practicing passes, shooting and control all the time, but I’ve lost that skill in recent years!”
Who’s the best player you’ve played with in a team?
“I’ve played with some excellent players from America and London Academy’s. However, our skipper Stevie Romney is an excellent all-round footballer. She doesn’t stop running and she’s there winning every ball. Not only this but she connects play superbly and scores quite a lot of goals!”
What do you do outside of WEFC?
“I’m a paramedic for the London Ambulance Service! It can make being consistent at training and matches difficult, but WEFC are fantastic, and being able to play here is such a good way for me to switch off from work and enjoy the beautiful game again!”
