Wantage Town Women vs Windsor & Eton Women

Match Report

A thrilling County Cup first-round clash against Wantage FC occurred on Sunday for our women’s side. There was an air of excitement as both sides took to the field, and it was Windsor who made the sensational start, when just minutes in, Captain Emma unleashed a stunning long-range strike, sending the ball soaring into the back of the net! What a goal! But the home side weren’t going to back down easily. They respond with a flurry of attacks, and despite some incredible saves from our keeper, Tabs, they found the net twice, swinging the momentum back in their favour.

We continued to press forward, with solid attempts from Laura, Georgie Hill, Emma, and Sophie. The back line was resolute, with Jodie, Becs, and Laura putting in a stellar defensive performance. Emma stepped up when it mattered, clearing the danger, and it paid off when Georgie Hill struck back, levelling the score at 2-2!

As the first half unfolded, we kept the pressure on, creating more opportunities. However, Wantage capitalised on a long ball, scoring a third goal against the run of play. It was a tough blow as the side headed into halftime trailing 3-2.

The second half kicked off with Windsor determined to turn the tide. Tabs was in fine form, making some crucial saves, while Sophie and Jodie stood strong in defence. But Wantage pushed forward again and found the back of the net for their fourth goal, extending their lead to 4-2. Sophie Kinsman nearly responded, but her effort went narrowly wide.

Wantage sadly weren’t finished and they launch another long ball, and just like that, it was 5-2. The side battled hard throughout the match, showcasing their heart and determination. While it may not have been our day, the effort, passion, and teamwork were evident on the pitch.

A commendable performance from all the girls! They can hold their heads high, knowing they gave it their all. Keep fighting!
