Match Report

We travelled to London on February 10 to face Edgware & Kingsbury who sat rock bottom of the table with the joint worst goal difference in the league.  Albeit not quite Wembley (which was only two miles away), still a tough place to go away on a Tuesday night.

We claimed a 2-0 win thanks to goals from substitutes Ethan Darcy and Leo Decabo.

The away side nearly found themselves a goal down early doors as the first big chance of the game fell to striker Hamza Miezou who was through on goal before Toby Bridges and Tahir Carmichael were able to recover and distinguish the attack

Almost immediately after, the ball was at the other end and this time almost the back of the net. We countered well and after some good interchange play, Ross McKernan slid through Aiden Payne-James who rounded the keeper but saw his shot go just wide of the post, after being clattered into by the keeper but no foul given and the result was a goal kick.

The opening 15 minutes were fairly even, with Webby’s men edging possession slightly. Edgware and Kingsbury found themselves with space on the edge of the box at one point and had an effort but it wasn’t close enough to trouble Finley Purcell in goal who had very little to do in the opening exchanges.

After a turnover in possession, the home side could break and their winger was played in, the angle was tight but elected to toe poke his effort which flied well wide, another wasted opportunity from a side struggling at the foot of the table.

The team from Berkshire controlled possession and played some good football, Edgware stayed compact and hard to break down.

With 10 minutes to go, Isaiah Chase-Kelly’s run was found by Nick Thumwood with a brilliantly weighted pass before getting the return just outside the six-yard box and with a first time shot, Thumwood’s effort was blocked.

The first half ended all square, with fairly little action in each respective penalty boxes. Leo Decabo came on in place of Enzo Pashaj at the break.

We dominate the ball in the opening 5-10 minutes of the second half, with Payne-Jones looking sharp, drawing some good fouls and being an overall threat.

A well worked corner routine from us saw Decabo’s cross find the head of Luke Phillips who glanced wide. A difficult chance to take from the defender.

Payne-Jone’s effort from the edge of the box was dragged a little, and found it’s was into the gloved of Lincon Marques, the winger started brightly in the second half.

On the 65th minute, the home side had a golden chance to break the deadlock with the Edgware and Kingsbury winger being played through and driving a low shot from the right which whistled past the left-hand sided post.

With 20 minutes to go the Londoner’s had a penalty shout which is waved away by the referee, it looked a soft call and thankfully the ref agreed.

We broke the deadlock with 15 minutes to go, Decabo as a substitute scored with a cracking finish from outside the box. Sam Hutchings won the ball back in midfield before playing through Ethan Darcey, another substitute who bombed forward before cutting the ball back for Decabo who curls it first time into the bottom right hand corner. A relief to the travelling support and a great move from us as a team.

We continued to push for another goal as Decabo was involved once more and after a one-two with Thumwood, the striker received the ball on the edge of the area and shot first time which rolled wide of the post.

Substitutes combined again as Ben Catt’s ball found Ethan Darcey who’s first touch set him away past the defender and from there, he was one-on-one with the defender and finished brilliantly. The game finally wrapped up.

Midfielder Ross McKernan received player of the match after a dominant display in midfield, winning 45% of the votes.

A hard-fought win on the road from us and we go again this Saturday, in a crunch match against league leaders Burnham.
