AFC Winkfield vs Windsor & Eton

Match Report

Matt Angell’s side suffered a first competitive defeat of the season, losing 1-0 away to bottom club AFC Winkfield. Windsor started slowly and the home side  more than held their own, causing our defence problems from the first minute. George Armstrong was called into action in the 8th minutes, a fine save following a rebounded shot from his left hand post. Moments later the home side struck the crossbar from a looping header. Winkfield should have taken the lead on 26 minutes when clean through on goal the attacker lobbed both George Armstrong and fortunately for us the uprights.

Ashley Howes had our best chances, hitting both posts in a ten minutes period before half time, the only real chances of significance for the away side, who may have expected a hatful of chances to come their way.

In a first half devoid of quality, Shaquille Johnson was industrious and combative.

James Clark was introduced at the start of the second half and added urgency to our play. It was Clark who had our first effort, a low shot dragged wide. Moments later Ashley Howes’ cross shot squirmed through the home keeper’s legs only to be gathered on the line.

Fifi Carter and Jack Beech were introduced, Carter’s first touch a curled free kick whistling past the Winkfield post.

The only goal of the game came from a penalty dispatched by the Winkfield skipper after Beech fell foul of the unnatural hand law blighting the modern game.

We had numerous half chances and go mouth scrambles in the final 12 minutes, Carter, Howes and Johnson all agonisingly close to equalising. The best chance fell the Clark who looked certain to head home before Jamel Johnson attempted a more spectacular finish.

A poor result for us compounded by injuries to Beech, Boylan and King.
