Match Report
There are breathtaking games and there are breathtaking games, and this was a breathtaking game! Coming into the game on the back of 12 successive league wins, this one was always going to be tough with so many connections between the two sides. The home side got off to a great start when Ashley Howes put us ahead in only the 6th minute. But for people who thought this would then be one way traffic they were wrong, as if anything, the goal galvanised the visitors, forcing us into a number of mistakes and it was no surprise when Will May equalised for the visitors in the 32nd minute. Whatever instructions were given at half time had to be rethought as the visitors went ahead straight after the restart. And that lead became a 2 goal lead when Will May got his second and made it 3-1 in the 65th minute. And this is where the grit, determination and character of our side shone through. Ross McKernan reduced the deficit in the 68th minute with an excellent finish and then two minute later Jude Van Spall made it 3-3 with a header. But there was a lot more drama to come in injury time. Pawel Kowalkowski thought he’d won it for the home side when his cool finish made it 4-3 in the 90th minute. In fact given the celebrations, we all thought we’d won it! The visitors didn’t give up though and Luke Cox made it 4-4 3 minutes into injury time, with an outstanding long range effort. Their celebrations understandably thought that’d rescued a point and put an end to our long winning run. But 2 minutes later, and pretty much the last kick of the game, another cool finish from Pawel, made it 5-4, which led to even louder celebrations! A brilliant 3 points and a win which really showed the squad’s desire to achieve something special this season.
