Barton Rovers Women vs Windsor & Eton Women

Match Report

Windsor & Eton FC Women started their first ever season on a very hot Sunday afternoon in Theale against Barton Rovers Women.

After a solid start, Windsor took a deserved lead when Captain Stevie Romney popped up at the back post to convert a corner flicked on by Laura McGregor.

A physical Barton Rovers side broke away after what appeared to be a foul, but debutant goalkeeper Tabitha Gafencu made a stunning one on one save to force the ball out for a corner. There was nothing the stopper could have done to stop Barton equalising against the run of play from the resulting set piece which fell kindly for the home side.

Windsor quickly settled back into their passing rhythm and regained the lead before half time when some quick thinking from Emma Hester found Georgie Hill in behind the Barton defence and she took her time, picked her spot, and found the corner she was aiming for to grab the striker’s first goal of the season.

Windsor controlled the 2^nd half very well, coping with the physicality and creating regular opportunities to score. The Windsor back line was impressively marshalled by Michelle Anderson who kept her defence on their toes with a high line which has quickly become her trademark.

Sophie Kinsman smashed her chance in another corner, excellently delivered by Emma, the set pieces were a threat all day.

Stevie found herself through on goal after beating the last line of Barton’s defence and calmly curled her finish around the keeper for her 2^nd of the day.

There was time for a late 5^th to round off a perfect start for Windsor when Stevie slipped the ball in behind for Sophie to grab her 2^nd

A very impressive start for a newly founded team and lots of positives to build on ahead of the first home game at Stag Meadow.
