Player Interview: Sam Whitehead

10 November 2024,

A player who has perhaps gone under the radar this season, 12 starts would suggest Sam Whitehead is very much a man in the thoughts of Matt Angell. What do we know of Sam?

“I properly started my football career at Ascot United where I played through the age groups and worked my way towards the first team. I’ve had spells at both Woking and AFC Winkfield. I actually played against Windsor & Eton at Stag meadow last year. This is the first time playing under Matty, and already I have learnt so much from both him and the coaching staff. I’ve improved as a player in such a short space of time.

I’d probably say my favourite position is a defensive midfielder, but I also enjoy doing a box-to-box type role in midfield. If I had to describe myself, I’d say I was a ball playing midfielder with a good engine and someone who loves a tackle!”

What’s your ambition or a target?

“My ambition right now with the club is black and white, win the league and have the best possible run in the FA Vase. My ambitions as I get older are to try and develop as much as I can as a player and hopefully climb the football pyramid with this fantastic club.”

Who’s the best player you’ve played with so far?

“Probably a lad called Jack Matton who I played with while I was at Woking. He just recently signed his Professional contract at Wycombe Wanderers.”

Which player at WEFC wouldn’t you like to play against?

“This is a very tough question as there are some exceptional talents in our squad. If I was to pick one it would probably be Ross McKernan. His experience, skill and engine would make him a very difficult player to come up against, especially in the position I play!”

The best piece of footballing advice you’ve been given?

“To see the game in front of me. By this I mean read and interpret the game from multiple positions and viewpoints on the pitch to give me a better understanding of how I need to play.”

Is there something you’d like to be better at?

“I have always wanted to add more goals to my game, I mean, I must admit it has not started off brilliantly this season, but definitely getting on the score sheet more often is something I want to achieve.”

What do you do outside of WEFC?

“I coach at various schools around Berkshire on weekdays. I also referee up to under 18s football on a Saturday and Sunday morning!”
