A chance this week to speak with Captain Ben Hutchings! Ben is a new face at Stag Meadow having signed in the summer.
Where have you played previously and have you played under Matt before?
“I’ve been around the block a bit to be fair. I started at Aldershot where I was lucky enough to be involved with the first team while they were in League Two. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out for me. I then went to America for 3 years to play and study. Since returning I’ve played with teams from step 4-6.
I’ve never played under Matt before! He’s been on my case for years! I’ve known him and Webby for a long time. When I spoke to them in the summer, I knew they had something good going on at Stag Meadow and I knew I had to be part of it.”
How would you describe your playing style?
“I like to think I’m a ball playing centre half, who reads the game well. I like to lead from the back and feel the boys probably see me as the talker on the pitch.”
What’s your ambition at Windsor?
“Win the league, simple as that. We have the squad, the management team and club to do it. The club is ambitious and is good to be around. I’m 32 now, so it’s not so much about climbing the leagues but more about playing and enjoying my football and that’s exactly what I am doing here.”
Who’s the best player you’ve played with in a team?
“I’ve been lucky to play with a few but for me it was Ricky Newman when I was at Aldershot. He had played over 300 Premier & Football league games and being a young player coming up into the first team, he taught me a lot. Scott Davies is another, He’s the manager at Slough Town now but technically he was ridiculous.”
Best piece of footballing advice you’ve ever been given?
“My dad always tells me to just enjoy playing football because it doesn’t last long and the closer I get to end of my career, he isn’t wrong.”
What do you consider your biggest asset, and how about something you’d like to be better at?
“Being able to go out on a Friday night and still play to a good level on a Saturday …Hopefully Matty doesn’t read these …Not something I’d like to be better at as such, but to look after myself a bit more this season. I had a few injuries last season and don’t want the same happening this year.”
