Our thanks this week to Ross McKernan for finding the time to talk to us.
We know Ross has played at a higher level, but where and when?
“I started out playing for Hayes & Yeading Under 18s until I was 18. We won the Middlesex County Cup and I then moved onto Basingstoke u21s, where I met Matt (Angell). I had a short stint with Binfield and then I stopped playing for a year or so. I heard Matt was down at Eversley, joined and I spent about 4 years with him. I moved on when Matt and Webby left. I joined Ashford Town, but injury cut my season short, and Matt came calling for the new season and here I am!”
What’s your best position and or where would you prefer to play and how do you describe your playing style?
“I prefer to play as a CAM which is where I generally play but mainly in the midfield area will do for me. I would say that I am a good organiser.”
What’s your ambition?
“I think most important thing is to enjoy your football and if we win trophies along the way then that’s also a bonus.”
Who’s the best player you’ve played with in a team?
“James Harper for sure. It wasn’t in a team as I was in the youth team for Hayes and Yeading but I got to train with the first team. The standard he set was so good even at the back end of his career. Another one that springs to mind would be Gabriel Osho who I played with at school. He is a strong Centre Back who played for Luton in the Premier League.”
Any player you’d hate to play against every week?
“Ben Catt, he’s just very physical and isn’t scared of getting a booking.”
Best piece of footballing advice you’ve ever been given?
“As cliche as it is, always give 100% as that’s the minimum you should be giving to your team.”
What do you consider your biggest asset and something you’d like to be better at?
“I would say passing and ball retention are my best assets. As for improvements, Shooting – I think most the fans stood next to the goal will agree.”
What’s the best goal you’ve ever scored?
“Playing for Eversley against Berks County. I shot from about 30 yards into the top corner to win the game 2-1 which got us play offs that season.”
Best ground you’ve ever played at?
“It would have to be Cambridge United in the FA youth cup.”
What do you do outside of WEFC?
“So, day to day I’m a roofer. In my spare time I like to play darts and try and play golf which isn’t going overly well.”
